M-PESA Mobile Money Infrastructure
The mobile money revolution that banked the unbanked — Kenya's gift to global fintech.
M-PESA is the world's most successful mobile money platform, launched by Safaricom in Kenya in 2007. The service enables users to deposit, withdraw, transfer money, pay for goods and services, and access financial products using a basic mobile phone, without requiring a traditional bank account. As of 2024, M-PESA processes over $300 billion in annual transaction value across 7 African countries and serves over 60 million active users. The underlying infrastructure includes a network of over 600,000 agent outlets, sophisticated real-time transaction processing systems, and deep integration with Kenya's banking sector. M-PESA has become a case study in financial inclusion and is widely credited with lifting millions of Kenyans out of extreme poverty.

Research published in Science magazine found that M-PESA lifted approximately 194,000 Kenyan households (2% of the population) out of extreme poverty between 2008 and 2014. The platform processes over $300 billion annually — equivalent to more than three times Kenya's GDP — making it the backbone of the Kenyan economy. M-PESA has enabled financial inclusion for tens of millions of previously unbanked Africans and has spawned an entire ecosystem of fintech companies. Over 600,000 agent outlets provide employment across Africa, and the platform has become a model replicated across the developing world.
