M-PESA is the world's most successful mobile money platform, launched by Safaricom in Kenya in 2007. The service enables users to deposit, withdraw, transfer money, pay for goods and services, and access financial products using a basic mobile phone, without requiring a traditional bank account. As of 2024, M-PESA processes over $300 billion in annual transaction value across 7 African countries and serves over 60 million active users. The underlying infrastructure includes a network of over 600,000 agent outlets, sophisticated real-time transaction processing systems, and deep integration with Kenya's banking sector. M-PESA has become a case study in financial inclusion and is widely credited with lifting millions of Kenyans out of extreme poverty.

What the project is trying to do

  1. 1Provide accessible financial services to unbanked and underbanked populations across Africa
  2. 2Process hundreds of billions of dollars in annual transaction value securely and reliably
  3. 3Maintain a network of over 600,000 agent outlets as the physical cash-in/cash-out infrastructure
  4. 4Expand the M-PESA ecosystem to include savings, lending, insurance, and investment products
  5. 5Enable businesses of all sizes to accept digital payments and access working capital
  6. 6Scale the platform across multiple African and international markets

What it means for people nearby

Research published in Science magazine found that M-PESA lifted approximately 194,000 Kenyan households (2% of the population) out of extreme poverty between 2008 and 2014. The platform processes over $300 billion annually — equivalent to more than three times Kenya's GDP — making it the backbone of the Kenyan economy. M-PESA has enabled financial inclusion for tens of millions of previously unbanked Africans and has spawned an entire ecosystem of fintech companies. Over 600,000 agent outlets provide employment across Africa, and the platform has become a model replicated across the developing world.

Where it stands

2025: Financial Ecosystem Deepening. Continued expansion of M-PESA's financial services ecosystem including insurance, investment products, and cross-border remittances. Platform processes over 60 million transactions daily. Current status: Ongoing.
