Volkswagen Rwanda Assembly Plant

East Africa's first modern car assembly plant — putting Rwanda on the automotive map.

Explainer film in production
§ 01About the project

Volkswagen Rwanda is a vehicle assembly and mobility services operation established in Kigali in 2018, marking the first time Volkswagen assembled vehicles in East Africa. The plant assembles Polo, Tiguan, and Passat models using semi-knocked-down (SKD) kits imported from VW's South African plant. Beyond assembly, VW Rwanda pioneered a car-sharing mobility service called Move, one of the first of its kind in Africa, using a smartphone app to provide affordable ride-sharing. The operation serves as VW's testbed for new mobility models in emerging African markets.

§ 02What it aims to do
  1. 01Establish a modern vehicle assembly capability in East Africa starting with semi-knocked-down kit assembly
  2. 02Develop and test new urban mobility solutions including car-sharing services for African cities
  3. 03Build local automotive skills and a trained workforce pipeline for Rwanda's industrialisation goals
  4. 04Support Rwanda's Vision 2050 goal of becoming a middle-income knowledge-based economy
  5. 05Demonstrate the viability of automotive manufacturing in East Africa to attract further investment
