Sabodala-Massawa Gold Mine
Senegal's largest gold mine, with a new BIOX plant to unlock harder-to-process ore.
Sabodala-Massawa is an open-pit gold mine in eastern Senegal operated by Endeavour Mining, which owns 90%; the Government of Senegal owns 10%. Endeavour acquired the mine through its 2021 takeover of Teranga Gold. A US$290 million expansion built a 1.2 million-tonne-a-year BIOX plant, which uses bacteria to treat refractory ore that conventional leaching cannot. It poured first gold in April 2024 and was designed to add about 194,000 ounces a year over its first five years. Endeavour reported 2024 production of about 229,000 ounces, well below its earlier guidance.
- 01Bring the BIOX plant up to its 1.2 million-tonne-a-year nameplate capacity
- 02Process refractory ore that conventional leaching cannot treat
- 03Raise production toward Endeavour's targets for the expanded operation
- 04Support Senegal's mining revenues through the state's 10% stake

What it means for the community
Sabodala-Massawa is Senegal's largest gold mine and an important source of export earnings and revenue for the state, which owns 10%. Eastern Senegal is also a centre of artisanal gold mining, and relations between industrial and artisanal miners are an ongoing issue.
