Tanger Med is a major port complex on the Strait of Gibraltar in northern Morocco, approximately 40 km east of Tangier. It is Africa's largest port by container throughput and ranks among the top 25 globally, handling over 9 million TEU annually following the opening of Tanger Med 2 in 2019. The complex includes container terminals, a vehicle terminal, a passenger and ferry terminal, and free trade zones. The total investment across all phases exceeds $8 billion. Operated primarily by APM Terminals, Eurogate, and Marsa Maroc, it serves as a major trans-shipment hub linking Africa, Europe, and the Americas.

What the project is trying to do

  1. 1Establish Morocco as the leading trans-shipment hub in the Mediterranean and Africa
  2. 2Capture container traffic at the intersection of major East-West and North-South shipping lanes
  3. 3Attract foreign direct investment through integrated free trade zones
  4. 4Create a world-class automotive export hub linked to Renault and other plants
  5. 5Generate large-scale employment in the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region
  6. 6Diversify Morocco's economy beyond agriculture and phosphates

What it means for people nearby

Tanger Med has transformed Morocco into Africa's top maritime nation, generating over 80,000 jobs in the port and associated free zones. The port complex contributes significantly to Morocco's GDP and has attracted over $1 billion in annual FDI to the Tangier region. It has positioned Morocco as a critical node in global supply chains, with 180+ ports connected worldwide, and the free zones host over 1,100 companies including major automotive and aerospace manufacturers.

Where it stands
